Trame Mediterranee Blue Edition Kick-Off
With an area that covers two thirds of the planet, seas and oceans are the true blue gold of our communities, our natural ecosystems and economies, both local and global.
Celebrating today the fourteenth World Oceans Day is a way to draw attention to the theme of the care of delicate marine ecosystems but also and above all to unite the peoples of the world in acollective action for the regeneration of seas, oceans and all that comes from them. This, in fact, is the theme of World Day of this year.
We know today that the oceans are the most important regulators of climate change, that they are extraordinary sponges against greenhouse gases and the first suppliers of water and oxygen we need to survive. We are well aware today of how the oceans contribute to the social and economic survival of communities, ensuring liveable environments and opportunities for work and livelihood. Yet, today they continue to be deeply mysterious environments to man: beyond the 90% of undersea species are still unknown. As they continue to be deeply threatened today: marine pollution, warming of the oceans, eutrophication, acidification, overfishing and the destruction of marine habitats hinder the biodiversity of ecosystems and ocean food networks. These challenges affect both the seas and fundamental human rights, especially for small local fishermen, who depend to a large extent on the health of the oceans for their survival.
For this more than slogans and words today we need actions. Collective, participatory, inclusive, ambitious and regenerative actions. Actions born from the meeting of the various actors and protagonists, local and global, to co-create together real solutions and able to take into account different needs, to create the basis of a collective prosperity.
It is from this need that Trame Mediterranee Blue Edition is born, six days in which directly from Pollica, the heart of the Mediterranean, young people and fishermen will meet, together with scientists and experts of the fish ecosystem, to re-discover the Mediterranean and co-design, through design methodologies and Prosperity thinking, practical proposals for the construction of the first Experimental Marine Area, Italy and Cilento.
Too often marine protected areas are considered areas of denial and deprivation: particularly vulnerable or damaged areas, areas where it is not possible to fish or transit. Instead, these same areas could turn into incredible opportunities: Experimental Marine Areas where the role of fishermen becomes strategic again; places of care and research for sustainable innovation, at the slow pace of the c-slow, the time of Regeneration.
That’s why we started from the Mediterranean, a hotspot of biodiversity and a place characterized by small-scale fishing. Thanks to the collaboration between the Future Food Institute, the City of Pollica and the Centro Studi Dieta Mediterranea Angelo Vassallo, from 4 to 9 July 2022 this area will become a laboratory of integral ecology, to create awareness of the immense value of the intangible heritage contained in the concept of the Mediterranean Diet and create models for a sustainable Mediterranean future.
